about

Colleen Cousins is a Naarm/ Melbourne based visual artist living and working on Wurundjeri land. She is a mother, grandmother, partner and mental health professional of over three decades. Each of these roles is inextricably connected to, and inspire her art practice. Colleen is also deeply inspired and captivated by the evocative colour, texture and form of the Australian landscape. She employs acrylics, ink and other media in her mark making to convey the beauty and diversity of the land. She is especially curious about the coexisting dichotomies of simplicity and complexity, harshness and softness, warmth and coolness, vulnerability and robustness alive in the landscape and alive in each one of us.

biography

Colleen graduated with a Diploma of Visual Art from the Northern College of Art and Technology (NCAT) in 2024.  Over 30 years ago she engaged in life drawing classes inspiring an exploration of abstraction and mixed media. As a mental health professional, Colleen attributes significant creative inspiration to the rich narratives of adversity and transformation she has been privileged to bear witness to over many years. Drawn to intuitive creative processes and organic mark making, her works explore the unique beauty and complexity of the land and what she describes as, the “parallels” with our experience as human beings. Colleen has exhibited her works in multiple group shows in Melbourne.
